GR Church and Funeral Home, Threatened by Racist Threats
Todd Jamerson, 26, appeared in court, Monday, for a pre – trial hearing. He faces charges of ethnic intimidation, stalking and using a telephone to intimidate and harass.
Jamerson pleaded guilty to charges and is to appear before Kent County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Becker for sentencing next week. Bond was set at $12,000.
On Wednesday November, 14, 2018 Grand Rapids Police were called to investigate the voicemails and emails that included racial slurs and that were directed to Brown - Hutcherson Ministries and Brown's Funeral Home. Jamerson admitted to making the calls.
Rev. Nathaniel Moody, pastor of Brown - Hutcherson Ministries said he thinks the bond is too low. He and his congregation as well as others in the community do not want the case to be taken lightly.
Neither do the twenty - five pastors that attended the hearing in support of Pastor Moody, the congregation and funeral home staff.
"Some people on social media are questioning whether or not this was a hate crime. Some are suggesting that Jamerson might not be aware of what he was doing," Pastor Moody said to The Grand Rapids Times, Thursday.
He continued, "I could care less about whether this was a hate crime or whether Jamerson is confused or just angry. I am concerned more about the alarm the incident has created." said.
He added, "The fact is that he made the calls. The point is that he threatened to kill. Whether it was the church or the funeral home, the impact has been felt across the community. We want to see that justice is done."
