Jerome E. Sorrells

Jerome Edward Sorrells was born on May 15, 1937, to Edna Mae Conyers in Rockmart, Georgia, and entered his heavenly home on November 24, 2023, at the age of 86. Raised by his devoted parents, Barry and Tivola Sorrells of South Haven, Michigan, Jerome's upbringing was also profoundly shaped by the love and care of his Uncle and Aunt, Obbie and Betty Dillard. His laughter-filled journey through life touched the hearts of many, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Jerome resided in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the majority of his life, later making Marietta, Georgia his home in December 2019. His final journey was embarked upon with grace and dignity, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and profound impact.

Jerome leaves behind his partner and love of his life, Majewel Sorrells, and their children: son Anthony Sorrells (Renee), daughter Dr. Crystal Roberson, daughter Tammie Sorrells-Campbell (Harry), daughter April Sorrells, and daughter Kimberly Cones (Allen). He leaves to cherish a tribe of 13 Grandchildren, and 38 Great-grandchildren who affectionately call him "Papa"; a sister Janice Dobbs, and of special mention Fred Trevino, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Jerome's quest for knowledge started at Green Glade Primary School, where he aced the art of mischief and made lifelong friends and lifelong memories. He graduated from South Haven High School and completed his education at Davenport Institute of Business (University), earning a bachelor's degree in business management.

Affectionately known as "Tiger Sorrells," Jerome was a force both in and out of the boxing ring. A passionate teacher, mentor, and coach, he inspired countless young men and women in their pursuit of boxing excellence. His impact extended to the Seidman Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Benton Harbor, Michigan, where he organized and coached boxing clubs.

As the first licensed Black general contractor in Grand Rapids and Kent County, Jerome's professional achievements and accolades as a contractor were monumental. He also served on the Grand Rapids City Planning Commission. His dedication to community activism was exemplified by his role as the 26th President of the NAACP in 1968.

Regarding his faith, Jerome found his place at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where he was pastored by the legendary Rev. Charlie Jones.

Jerome Sorrells' infectious joy will forever resonate with those whose lives he touched. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit lives on, urging us to "fly like an eagle and not run with the turkeys". Rest assured, Jerome's legacy of laughter, his fondly remembered "pokeys," and his forehead kisses will forever echo in our hearts.

A celebration of Jerome's remarkable life will take place on Monday, December 11, 2023, at 10:00 am at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 60 Dennis SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506. The ceremony will be conducted by Toombs by Crystal Funeral Services in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Let us come together to honor Jerome's memory with laughter, shared stories, and a celebration of the enduring memories he has gifted us with.
