Election November 2022

There will be an election in November 2022 and you won't be able to participate. Now don't get your anger mold out to do battle. No one is stepping on your voting rights or putting up barriers to impede your path toward doing your civic duty. No, no, no, nothing this drastic as one of our own native daughters is running for congress.

Loretta Smith, an Ottawa Hills Indian grad, who resides in Portland, Oregon, is running for US Congress as a representative for the 6th Congressional District in Oregon. Who knew that a foundation while in high school was being set for and by a young lady who was a teacher aide for two years for a rookie teacher who was a solid member of Mrs. Ernestine Harris' Pom Pom/Dance Squad and a point producer for Mrs. Camilla Carter's track team. After graduating from the O, Loretta followed the advice of Horace Greeley and went west to attend and graduate from Oregon State. I think she went there because they have the same school colors as Ottawa Hills, black and orange. While there she used an opportunity to do an internship in London.

Understand good people, no one saw this coming from a young lady who came from an inner city, cosmopolitan, United Nation neighborhood and high school as she used all these life experiences to give her visions and wisdom. For us, she fell off the radar after graduating from Oregon State, but for her the fun was just beginning in a life of politics in Oregon. Starting off in the entry level meet and greet position to a person who was counted on to solve and resolve issues, gave her 21 years of experience from working as a staffer for US Senator Ron Wyden. After a little push and encouragement from her peers she ran for a political office. Loretta did a fine tour of duty serving the people in Oregon as Multnomah County Commissioner from 2011 to 2018. During this timespan, while serving the people she was a single parent, raising a son who was into sports which meant many weekends traveling to AAU events.

So you do the math and know the drill to balance work and the needs and joy for your child. Nevertheless there is joy in her heart to do for others as she has done for her son. This is her passion and calling to use the political arena to help people. She can count on people like Ex-President Obama and Jessie Jackson among the many to answer her calls to give her advice and encouragement in politics as well as in her position as Principal/Small Business Owner at Dream Big Communications LLC.

She doesn't hide from those who question the determination and drive of a Black woman to do justice for all people. Yes, in her words, she is a champion for younger and older people as well as low income folks, but she isn't kicking any citizen off her friendship train while it is on the tracks toward reaching and helping all the people in that 6th District in Oregon.

Loretta is fighting that good battle that one encounters when they are in and run for office. Politics can be dirty when people fear that you can and will win and thus will start throwing dirt, sticks and stones at you. Again, using the moves she garnered from Pom Pom and track while in high school, Loretta has addressed her antagonist, with substance, style and nice showers to face another day toward that November 2022 election date. Now since we reside in Grand Rapids we can't vote for Loretta Smith in Portland Oregon in November 2022 but if you know people in her District who can vote then give them a holler to help a qualified leader get elected to Congress in 2022.

Hey good people in Portland, we won't be able to vote for Loretta in Grand Rapids Michigan but we shall be watching and pulling for one of our own in her quest to do some fine work for her constituents from the 6th District of Portland. Word of advice, Loretta wear some good, sturdy form fittings shoes as you run for glory. It wouldn't hurt to remember what Mrs. Carter said about using your
