Will There Be A Repeat Of The January 6 Insurrection?

On May 28, Republicans in the US Senate voted down the creation of an independent commission to try to get to the bottom of the why, who and what the unruly group of former President Trump's supporters were attempting to do when they stormed the US Capitol on January 6.

Speaker of The House of Representatives, Democrat, Nancy Pelosi has created a committee comprised primarily of her fellow Democrats. While rejecting the appointees of Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Pelosi has chosen two Republicans to serve on the select committee to give it somewhat of a bipartisan look, which is expected to take a nonpartisan approach to their investigation. There are some serious questions the Republican Senators as well as most of their members in the US House must ask themselves. It appears they are trying to put off doing anything that might move the country out of this dismal threat to the overthrow of our democratic system until after the 2022 election. Their belief seems to be they will take back the House and gain control of the US Senate as well. If that happens, they can sweep all investigations under the rug.

But if the tradition of the party of the newly elected president losing control of the House does not happen and Democrats maintain control of the House and Senate will this make the possibility of another attempted overthrow of the government even more likely in 2022? Could this even embolden former President Trump to seek another run for the presidency in 2024? If this happens, the so-called " Big Lie" that Trump won the election in 2020 could only be strengthened and the possibility of another attempted coup could be more a reality if he runs in 2024 and loses that election. Yes, there is a lot of speculation in what I'm suggesting, but not beyond the realm of reality. But what is also a possibility is that a great majority of people in the state feel threatened enough about the possible loss of our democracy turn out and vote. They find ways to vote despite the voter suppression laws popping up in many Republican- controlled state legislatures. It might become apparent even to some Trump supporters that nothing is more important than maintaining our democracy. We cannot discount the organizing skills of people like Stacey Abrams and her Fair Fight group, as well as Black Lives Matter and Grand Rapids' own Proactive. Many young people who have been out front demonstrating for various issues like police attacks on Blacks, and inequity in our society will be able to understand if we experience another insurrection like the one on January 6 or worse, none of these issues will matter. They too will have to help get out the vote so we can deal with the other issues. Without democracy no one is going to win. We know of the so-called Banana Republics which try to govern after they overthrow what may have been somewhat of a working republic. They may struggle through this, but can we in a divided country challenging every election we hold? My answer is we need a thorough investigation of the January 6 debacle, a united voting public in 2022 and 2024 and a maintenance of ours democracy.
