First of all, I wish to acknowledge the work of many individuals and organizations that have come forth in expressing their concerns and anger about the unnecessary death of Breonna Taylor. Out of this anger and deep sentiments about Breonna's fate, there have been many communities around the nation that have come together and developed numerous tributes and programs to pay respect to the life and services of Breonna. In Grand Rapids, there are many who wish to create a memorial edifice on her behalf. We do not wish to forget our native daughter and be ever- reminded that this City must make meaningful changes to ensure the safety and well-being of all Grand Rapids residents.

We have had many individuals and organizations to come forth with suggestions about how this community could come together to pay a lasting tribute to Breonna Taylor. In this regard, I have had numerous conversations with individuals within Grand Rapids, family members of Breonna Taylor, and many members from diverse community organizations.

I support the sentiments and concerns of these individuals about establishing a tribute to our Native daughter. Presently, there is a proposal before our City about replacing a street named in honor of Breonna. Please be advised that I will be supporting this proposal; but deep in my heart I feel, we, as a City Commission, should be challenged to establish a tribute in Breonna's honor that is more meaningful and longlasting than just changing the name of a street, or building.

In closing, I wish to give honor and respect to the many individuals, and especially the youth, who have come together from all states throughout this Nation, and are demanding that this Nation can, and MUST, change and become more equitable to all of its citizens. This City, and Nation, must open its eyes and hearts to the biases that continue to exist in our various communities. It is my prayer, that the City of Grand Rapids will become a model for other cities and states in moving in this needed direction.
