The Vote and The Mask: How to Save Ourselves

I do not want any of my dedicated readers to think I am becoming a soothsayer. Of course, I cannot foretell the future; nor, do I know of any magical means of saving our people. But, I do know politics — the spoken and inferred.

The spoken is quite apparent to all of us. There are those out there who will do anything to stop our vote from counting. They do it discretely and openly. We sometimes listen to their propaganda about "one vote does not matter". So when some of us in Michigan in the 2016 election heard that, we said they are right; my vote doesn't matter. So someone carries our state by only 11,000 votes! Only a few more voters in Detroit and a few more in 3rd ward Grand Rapids could have made the difference in who would have been elected the President of the United States.

Think about all the anguish you have gone through the past four years, and it has not stopped yet. We surely cannot run the risk of having someone chosen who has openly said he will eliminate Obama care. What then do you do for health insurance? Michigan's Expanded Medicaid is tied to Obamacare. What if you have a pre - existing health problem?

That will not be covered if Obamacare is eliminated . We need to vote to protect ourselves. We cannot wait on others to save us.

Speaking of others saving us, this is where we really must get serious — serious about Herd Immunity! This has such unspoken meaning, but in a subtle way, white Americans are encouraged to not wear masks, catch the Coronavirus and live through it with only minor inconveniences.

Except while they are walking around us without masks and the virus deep inside of them ready to pour onto those of us who are older, Black and Brown, what happens then?

If they have been told that a disproportionate number of the aforementioned groups will be the sacrificial lambs, they can walk around and not worry about serious consequences.

This surely is not totally true. Many whites have become seriously ill and many have died. But in keeping with their numbers in the overall population, we still are disproportionately affected.

But, you might ask why can't we all become part of the herd immunity theory; catch the virus, become immune and never wear another mask? The theory is that if 60% go through this, we may rid the nation of the virus. But, what about the 40% who do not survive this? Well, the thinking is, they are the weak ones, and as the saying goes; "survival of the fittest."

If all the top scientists are saying to wear your mask, keep your distance and stay away from crowds, and wait for a SAFE vaccine to be produced, why would we do otherwise?

What, you cannot wear your mask for another year if it means our survival?

Our ancestors went through a lot so we can be here today.

And we are going to let our pride and stubbornness wipe all that out? We are better than that. If the majority group wants to engage in Herd Immunity, let them. But whenever, and wherever they are around us, we should be fully masked.

We have two major ways to keep our race alive; vote in 2020 and every election thereafter and wear our masks, if not for ourselves, for the older, more infirmed members of our population and. of course. for our future generations. Give them a chance to carry on what our ancestors started more than 400 years ago.
