Time and place, time and place are so important when giving information. Thursday, August the first at 6:00 PM was the time; dinner table was the place when I gave my wife some important information. She had just seasoned the heck out of her corn on the cob and was taking a nice bite when I told her that the first football game was tonight which officially begins the football on TV season. She looked at me and said 'this is some good corn'. I told her you know what this means, right? She just smiled as she ate her corn and said again, "This is some good corn. It took a moment to realize that she was in denial, but I knew she knew the drill — time to watch FOOTBALL. No, we didn't watch too much of the preseason games but we gave it three minutes of watch time.

It is still summer time so people are still in cool out mode. It appears that many NBA players feel this way as they are turning down the invite to play for USA in the FIBA the World Championship. Much will be said about ALL the players who don't want to give their time to make the team. Oh, yes, there are tryouts so there could be that ego issue if they don't make the cut, but still much will be said about the ones who just said no. From where I sit, it should be no big deal if a player doesn't desire to represent the USA. I'd rather have the people who want to play rather than begging someone to play. Talent runs supreme in this country for basketball so finding the skilled players to compete and bring home the gold should be a nice tune to appreciate. Again, the world will not come to an end if so called stars don't wish to play or heaven forbid we don't win it because its just basketball.

Forgive me for talking basketball when our attention should be focused on baseball. I am not joining any bandwagon to talk ill about the Detroit Tigers as they are void of talent to compete with the Yankees, Red Soxs, Astros Twins, or Angels. The Tiger's focus is still two years down the road to put a roar in motion to bring some fear to the opponent. As they go about their plan to improve, fans should expect some interesting entertaining baseball for their money. As all baseball fans enjoy the game they also must be aware that could be, might be a LONG work stoppage down the road because the players want their share of the pie. The players want the owners to keep paying BIG money to non - producing players. The players and owners will need to do some soul searching on what to do to improve the game for the future generation as that foundation needs to be placed to keep this game that I love great. Nevertheless, it will come down to money, money and more money to make everyone baseball happy.

I am not golf happy at the moment. My friend, Tom Jeltema, asked if I fired my golf clubs and I told him that my clubs are still members of the household. I am not golf happy at the moment because I took a trip to Dick's Sporting Goods to check out some things and I was appalled at their blatant discrimination. They had golf pants that didn't go past waist size 40 or a length of 30. This means to Dick's, only short, skinny men play golf. If you are a person who enjoys food and can reach a door handle then Dick's doesn't want you in their place of business. Shame, shame, shame as the game of golf will bring its own share of pain, pain, and more pain. Oh well, it's only money.

Have a happy and hot week.
