MUSKEGON, Mich. – Eric Hood, Commissioner for Ward One, and by appointment, the current sitting vice mayor of the state's largest western shoreline city, is seeking another four-year term as a city commissioner when local voters go to the polls this Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in Muskegon County.

Dedicated to a life of helping others, and a son of a retired law enforcement officer, Vice Mayor Hood, 57, said he is a long-term resident who cares about his city. He said that giving of his time to serve a greater good, not only as the local NAACP branch president, but also as a former U.S. Army medic, and later as a police officer with the Muskegon Police Department from which he retired in 2008, it is only consistent and fitting with family tradition for him to continue serving through local politics.

"I've worked diligently, my whole career, in the service of people, my country, my city and my community," Mr. Hood said. "Muskegon has a diverse and resilient community and when the playing field becomes equal, there's no telling where Muskegon can go, and I feel that we're heading in the right direction (and) one of my goals is to bring more diversity to the downtown area."

Regarding the needs of his constituents, Mr. Hood added that building relationships through listening, finding solutions to local needs, and through both personal and professional past experiences best qualify him for reelection. "Being in the Army was a maturity experience and it was a chance to serve my country and grow at the same time, an experience I wouldn't trade for anything," Mr. Hood said. "As a police officer, I actually had a chance to make a difference in the lives of people, although I understood there were times they did not want to see me, there were other times where they definitely wanted to see me, but it was just good that I could be of service to the city as a law enforcement officer. I was very proud of my career as a police officer, he said.

Life-long friend, George M. Bennett Jr., a wellness center coordinator with Muskegon Family Care, said Eric Hood has been a very close friend for at least 35 years and that he first became acquainted with the councilman, and his brothers, through Mr. Hood's well-liked and respected father.

"I say this with true conviction, Eric is the most honest person, the most giving and the most caring person that I know on a personal level," Mr. Bennett said. "He puts the community on his shoulders and it doesn't matter which district you're in, he is going to take time to follow up on any kind of complaint that you come to him with," he said. "On a professional level and on a personal level he doesn't make a difference between a friend or a constituent," Mr. Bennett stated.

Vice Mayor Eric Hood is running for reelection as City of Muskegon Commissioner, Ward 1 on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.
