GGRBA Celebrates 15th Anniversary Of Holiday Scholarship Ball
One thing the hit film Spiderman: into the Spiderverse emphatically reminds us in this Trump weary America is that transforming our great nation lies in the hands of the young, gifted and black.
It is with this vision and embrace that the GGRBA presented its 15th annual holiday scholarship ball, "This Magic Moment", which celebrates the art of dance, the soul of urban music, and the transforming power of academic achievement.
The membership and planning committee planned this year's sold - out "red carpet" extravaganza held December 15th, 2018 at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza Hotel.
Approximately 200 guests attended and were beautifully attired.
The committee consists of: Faye and Terry Bradford, Angela and Leroy Melton, Mildred and Curtis Pinder, Harvey Sanders, Ziyadah Shakir and Liz Tucker.
The evening included an urban ballroom dance showcase, the crowning of Grand Rapids' own Urban Ballroom Queen and the awarding of three $500 HBCU scholarships.
The most important elements of our community - our elders and our youth - received special recognition during the evening.
Eighty - two year old Hazel Cole was crowned GGRBA's Ballroom Queen. She was honored with a crown, a silver sash and a rousing standing ovation.
The Greater Grand Rapids Ballroom Association awards their HBCU scholarships each December at their holiday ball. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of scholarship awards to Maya Thompson and Imani Hayden — both students at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida — and Jymrea White, a senior at City High School, who has been accepted at Norfolk State University in Virginia for Fall 2019.
Many ball guests expressed appreciation for GGRBA's supporting such deserving and impressive students.
