Grand Rapids, MI – The City Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a contract with Public Sector Search & Consulting Inc. (PSSC) to lead a national search for Grand Rapids' next police chief. PSSC will work closely with the City's Human Resources Department and City Manager Mark Washington during the process.

Washington noted the search firm's police executive recruitment experience, its diverse candidate pools in other cities and its understanding of community policing.

Washington expects to hire the new police chief this summer. PSSC will make onsite visits by to learn more about the Grand Rapids Police Department and its leadership needs and will engage department staff, City leaders, the City Commission, residents and other community stakeholders.

Details about these engagement opportunities will be announced once finalized.

"It is important we have the right leader to ensure the safety of our community," Washington said. "I am looking for someone who is tough on crime and who is an outstanding leader. I also want someone who is collaborative and is committed to community policing. I look forward to hearing from the community on other qualities we need in our next police chief. I am confident that whomever I choose can help us strengthen community-police relationships and continue to build trust."

Washington appointed Deputy Chief David Kiddle as interim chief last month to replace retiring Police Chief David Rahinsky.

"As we search for a new police chief, I appreciate the leadership of Interim Chief David Kiddle and the women and men of our police department. They continue to do a good job of keeping our community safe," Washington said.
