Local Story Previsouly Printed In GR Times, 2-27-2009
This final installment of the February Special Section ends The Grand Rapids Times features observing Black History Month.
The focus this week is on work of Black churches in the community and presents three pastors sharing how their churches continue to reach out to address issues facing the Black community: Rev. Howard Earle, Senior Pastor, New Hope Baptist Church; Rev. Nathaniel Moody, Senior Pastor, Brown- Hutcherson Ministries and Rev. Eula Gaddis, Pastor, Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church.
The section ends with the spotlight on three local civil servants– all firsts and all Giants.
With the local emphasis on diversity, it appears that Black History Month is not as celebrated as it used to be. There are fewer events in schools, on college campuses and in the community.
Commendations go to the Grand Rapids Public Library for The Taste of Soul events on last Sunday, February 22.
Kudos to David Lockington and The Grand Rapids Symphony for the continued celebration of gifts and talents of African American musical artists.
For people who believe that Black History Month Celebrations are is no longer necessary, we present for your consideration the comments Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) made in support of United States H. Res. 83 recognizing the significance of Black History Month.
