WMBA Hall of Famer Keynoter For Tall Turf Annual Building Bridges Banquet
Every year, Camp Tall Turf has its annual banquet event to update stake holders on what has happened over the past year and to give them the camp plans for the up - coming year.
This year's event has a different spin.
"What is special about this year is that we are celebrating our 50th year of having camp," said Marcus Hargrave. "We originated in 1968 and we had our first camp in 1969."
Hargrave has been President and CEO at Camp Tall Turf for three years.
"We have been blessed for over fifty years, with impacting the lives of well over ten thousand youth and helping them with their walk with Christ and helping them and also helping them to understand what racial reconciliation is," he said.
"Our program is not just for youth, it empowers families and it empowers adults to understand some of the complex issues around diversity," he added.
Hargrave went on to say, "As we move forward in grace for the next fifty years, we want to just say thank you to those who have supported us and celebrate some of the great things that have occurred. So this year we have one of our most prominent campers delivering the key - note address, former Tall Turf Camper, Olympic Gold medalist and WMBA Hall of Famer Cappie Pondexter."
Nicknamed CP, Pondexter's road to the WNBA has been one of natural progression. Fuelded by determination and the love for the game, Pondexter worked diligently to improve her own game. Born in California and raised in Chicago, this guard who stands at 5'9" was frequently challenged by boys to prove who the better player was.
As with any girl playing with all boys, Pondexter was rarely picked. However, the more she played and the more well - known she became in the Chicago area, the more she began to receive more respect.
Pondexter said, "I competed with guys, they would try and overpower me, but mentally, I wouldn't let it happen."
Pondexter was selected one of the Top 20 players of All time and recently was inducted in the Hall Of Fame at Rutgers University for her achievements on the court.
"She is the main draw," said Hargrave. "This is a special event not just for Tall Turf, but also for Grand Rapids to have a hall of famer, an Olympic Champion, World University Games Champion as the speaker. He also noted, "There are not too many times that we get someone of this magnitude to come and deliver a key - note speech for a non - profit. So we are very pleased and very proud and honored that she would come back and share some of her thoughts about our wonderful organization."
